Set up each kind of column

What each source needs, with tips for finding feeds, searching the news and following channels.

Every column type asks for a little different information. Presets are available for most of them, so you can often add a column with a single click.

You will need

1. RSS / Atom feed

An RSS or Atom feed is a web address that lists a site's latest stories. Most news sites, blogs and podcasts have one.

  1. Choose RSS / Atom feed.
  2. Paste the feed's full address into Feed URL. It must start with http:// or https://.

Many sites keep their feed at /feed or /rss, for example example.com/feed. If you can't find it, look for an RSS icon on the site or search the web for the site's name plus "RSS feed".

The presets include Google Trends (US), the Google News top stories and topics (World, U.S., Business, Technology, Entertainment, Sports, Science and Health), BBC News, NPR News, NYT Most Viewed, Ars Technica and The Verge.

Note: The feed has to be public. Addresses that point to a private network, such as localhost or a home router, are refused.

2. News search (Google) and Bing News

These two columns show news stories that match words you choose. They work the same way.

  1. Choose News search (Google) or Bing News.
  2. Type what to search for under Search for.
  3. Pick how recent the stories should be: Past hour, Past day, Past week or Any time.

You can sharpen a search with a few tricks:

TypeTo get
"solar eclipse"Stories with that exact phrase
lottery OR jackpotStories with either word
site:npr.orgStories from one website only

You can combine them, for example "electric cars" site:npr.org.

Tip: The Past hour and Past day options are best for a column you want to watch as things happen.

3. Reddit

  1. Choose Reddit.
  2. Type a subreddit's name under Subreddit. With or without the r/ is fine.
  3. Pick how to sort it:
SortWhat you see
HotWhat's popular right now
NewThe newest posts
RisingPosts that are taking off
Top todayThe highest-scoring posts of the past day

Presets cover popular subreddits such as r/news, r/technology and r/todayilearned.

4. Hacker News

  1. Choose Hacker News.
  2. Pick Front page for the stories everyone is reading, or Search and type a word to see the newest stories that match it.

Each story shows its points and comment count under the title.

5. YouTube channel

A YouTube column shows a channel's newest uploads.

  1. Choose YouTube channel.
  2. Paste the channel's address, its @handle, or its channel id (it starts with UC) into Channel.

Tip: If Info Deck says it can't find the channel, open the channel in YouTube and paste the full address from your browser's address bar.
